I met Dr. Berkowitz through my business as a pharmaceutical sales rep. Every few months I'd bring him samples of insulin. During these visits, I started asking him about the type of medicine he practiced, and he told me something that I found really interesting: He said he was often able to help his diabetic patients get their blood sugar down without treating them with insulin. I didn't, at the time, think it applied to me personally-save for the fact that I sold a product that he didn't have much use for!
Then I started to feel out of sorts. I was only 32, but I could not get out of bed in the morning. I was tired and depressed, and I didn't know why. At 5 foot 8 inches tall and 142 pounds, I was not overweight. I'd been think my entire life. I just didn't feel right.
Fast-foward 2 years. Every little task felt difficult. My relationship with my significant other was falling apart. I did not have the energy to exercise. My friends kept telling me, "You are so young. you should be more healthy." My hair was falling out in clumps. It was horrifying. I was desperate.
I went to a series of doctors who prescribed one medication after another to treat my thyroid, balance my hormones, control my blood sugar, and treat my depression and insomnia-and they kept increasing the drug doses. i couldn't imagine taking this extensive cocktail of medicines for the rest of my life. They were treating my symptoms. They were not curing me.
One morning, I remembered Dr. Berkowitz and what he'd said about his patients with diabetes. If he could help them control their blood sugar without insulin, maybe he could help me. I made an appointment. He ran a series of tests that revealed that my blood sugar was spiking from very low to very high. He gave me an eating plan and some supplements. He didn't judge me in any way. I felt as if he were my partner in improving my health.
At first, I struggled with the dietary plan because I'm Indian and my traditional diet includes lots of rice, lentils, and bread. I included some of the more traditional fare, such as chickpeas. It took sheer willpower to get through the first few days. Once, in the beginning, I slipped up and allowed myself to eat a chocolate bar. Then I ate three more. The next morning I felt tired and so gross. It helped me make the connection between my diet and my health, and I never slipped up again after that.
My boyfriend was so supportive; he did the diet with me. Within a week I felt 50 percent better, and within a month I was 8 pounds lighter. I found I preferred this way of eating. I felt as if a horrible fog had been lifted.
Now I'm off almost all of my meds. I wake up every morning ready to face the day. Before this plan, I used to rush home from work so I could lie on the couch. Now, three or four times a week, I go to the gym after work. My relationship with my boyfriend has improved, and I am more fun and have more energy. I feel amazing. I have my life back.

Lipid storage diseases are inherited from one or both parents who carry a defective gene that regulates a particular protein in a class of the body’s cells. #NIH
They can be inherited two ways:
Autosomal recessive inheritance occurs when both parents carry and pass on a copy of the faulty gene, but neither parent is affected by the disorder.
X-linked (or sex-linked) recessive inheritance occurs when the mother carries the affected gene on the X chromosome that determines the child’s gender and passes it to her son.
